How to Personalise

How do I personalise my order?

Once you've chosen your piece, simply enter your chosen text in the personalisation field on the product page. This could be a name, a date, a short message, or something a little cheeky. You choose the words, I bring them to life.

How many characters can I engrave?

This will depend on the piece you choose. Forks in general have less space to engrave, whereas cake slices and spoons have a larger surface for longer messages. Bear in mind that long words / names (e.g. Marmalade) might be harder to fit on smaller pieces. If you have any doubt, feel free to email me and I'll help with the message!

Can I use special characters, symbols, or accents?

I engrave words, accents, and love hearts. No other symbols or special characters, I'm afraid.

Can I have anything I want engraved?

Yes, of course! All messages are possible as long as they don't exceed a certain number of characters, depending on the piece you've chosen.

Can I see a proof before you engrave?

I don't offer digital proofs, but if you have any questions about layout or wording, just get in touch before placing your order and I'll be happy to advise.

Hand Engraving

Is everything really engraved by hand?

Yes, every single piece is hand-engraved by me, one at a time. Not calligraphy, not print, not a machine, just free hand. Your message engraved directly onto the metal by hand. This means each piece has its own character and no two are ever exactly alike. My engraving style is unique, and letters won't be perfectly round. If you're want a perfect handwriting / calligraphy style then this probably isn't for you.

How long does engraving take?

Each piece is engraved by hand, so I ask for 2-4 working days for standard orders, although if you order before 7pm, I'll aim to engrave your piece the same day. If you need something sooner, please get in touch and I'll do my best to help.

Will the engraving last?

Yes it cuts directly into the metal so it's permanent. It won't fade, peel or wash off.

Is it food safe once engraved?

Yes, you can still use your cutlery once engraved. The engraving does not affect food safety.

How should I care for my engraved piece?

Hand wash with warm soapy water and dry straight away with a soft cloth. Avoid the dishwasher and anything abrasive. A gentle silver polish now and then will keep it looking lovely.

Vintage Gifts

Where do you source your cutlery?

I source everything from antique markets across the UK and work with trusted antique dealers who help me track down specific pieces. I can't order in bulk, and I also love a good mooch myself! It's a bit like the lottery, you never quite know what you'll find.

Are the pieces in perfect condition?

These are vintage pieces, so they come with the scratches and marks you'd expect from a life well lived. That's part of their charm. The exception is some of the mother of pearl pieces, which have had their blades replaced. If you're looking for something brand new and pristine, this probably isn't for you.

What is my cutlery made of?

Unless stated on the product page, all my cutlery is vintage and silver-plated. I source every piece at antique markets in the UK and spend hours cleaning these little treasures before engraving them.

For the mother of pearl collection, the handles are made from real mother of pearl from vintage cutlery, while the blades have sometimes been reworked in stainless steel (for cheese knives and cake slices). The mother of pearl butter knives are either silver plate or stainless steel, depending on the piece.

My piece has started to get black marks or change appearance, is this normal?

Completely normal. There are two things that can happen:

Tarnishing is a natural process resulting in the discolouration of the metal's surface due to a chemical reaction with its environment. It can range from a yellow dullness to a deep black, often appearing uneven or as black spots. This can easily be cleaned using a polish product. I personally use Silver Polish by Town Talk, but you can also find products like Silvo in supermarkets. For a more natural method, you can use a layer of foil along with baking soda. There are lots of tutorials on YouTube if needed.

Patina develops as you use and clean silver-plated cutlery, creating very fine microscopic scratches due to the soft nature of silver. Tarnish is an unwanted discolouration to be removed, while patina is a natural development that adds character to the piece.

Is my cutlery dishwasher safe?

No, please don't put mother of pearl or silver plated pieces in the dishwasher. If you do put silver plated cutlery in, it will deteriorate quickly. Also keep it separate from stainless steel objects, as contact between the two can cause damage. Hand wash only, always.

Can I choose the handle of my cutlery?

During busy periods (Mother's Day, Father's Day, November and December) this isn't possible given the volume of orders I receive. My stock is vintage and constantly renewed, with very limited quantities of each piece.

You can however add a note to your order. If you have a preference for a flowery, ornate, or more plain handle, don't hesitate to let me know and I'll choose the right piece for you. They all come with floral details, with more or less ornamentation on the handles.

During quieter periods, I'm happy to send you a picture of the remaining stock. The other way to choose your piece is to come and visit me at a market!

Knives

Why is the shipping more expensive for knives?

UK law requires that bladed items are delivered with age verification. I use Royal Mail's age verification service for all knife orders, which adds a small surcharge to the shipping cost.

Jewellery

What kind of jewellery do you have?

Some spoons and forks live a second life as rings and earrings. Earrings are listed on the website, while rings are available exclusively at markets.

How are the rings and earrings made?

Both rings and earrings start life as vintage silver-plated spoons or forks. The handles of spoons or tines of forks are cut, sanded and bent by hand by me into their new shape. They are then finished with either an extra layer of silver plate for a bright, shiny finish, or gold plated with 18ct or 24ct gold (5 microns for rings, 2.5 microns for earrings). The earring posts are soldered on by professional jeweller Annie from Frances Kirk.

Is the jewellery waterproof?

No. The plating can wear off over time, especially with exposure to water, sweat, or chemicals. Please avoid wearing your pieces in the shower, swimming, or when using perfume or lotions.

The plating is coming off my piece, is this normal?

Yes, this can happen over time with plated jewellery. I can arrange to have your piece replated for the cost of the plating, which is around £30 per piece depending on the current price of gold and silver. Get in touch at lucie@maisonspoon.com to arrange this.

My Order

How is my order sent?

All cutlery is wrapped in a reusable cotton pouch and sent with a little care and cleaning info card and order note. I also offer gift wrapping: you can choose to add a gift box to your order. If you'd like to add a personal message, I can write it by hand on a small card included in the parcel.

Do you include an invoice in the package?

No, I don't include any invoice in the parcel.

How long does it take to receive my order?

I usually try to engrave orders the same day I receive them (until 7pm), or the following day. If I have any questions about the engraving, I'll contact you, though please note this may delay your order slightly.

Once engraved, I ship your order the following day using Royal Mail Tracked 48, which typically takes 2–3 working days to arrive. For example, if you place your order on a Monday before 7pm, I'll engrave it the same day and ship it on Tuesday. You can expect delivery between Wednesday and Friday, though Royal Mail can be unpredictable at times.

During busy periods like Christmas, delivery times may be slightly longer due to seasonal delays.

I'm in a rush, do you offer express delivery or collection?

Yes! I can offer Royal Mail Next Day Delivery (not available on weekends). Please email lucie@maisonspoon.com if this option isn't showing at checkout.

Collection is also available if you're based in London. Get in touch to arrange this around the Bermondsey area (Bermondsey Street) during the day, or evenings in South East London (SE13, SE8, SE14). We can sort the details by email.
